What to do, minute by minute

  1. 1. Get comfortable

    0:005:15

Dim the lights, put your phone face-down, and lie down as if you were already going to sleep. Nothing here needs your effort.

  2. 2. Let the words carry you

    5:1510:30

Don't try to follow the story closely. Let the images drift past — half-listening is exactly right.

  3. 3. Soften the body

    10:3015:45

Unclench your jaw, drop your shoulders into the bed, and let your breathing slow on its own.

  4. 4. Drift

If you fall asleep before the end, the session has done its job. If you're still awake, just keep resting — that counts too.

An afternoon spent doing very little, described carefully.

The screen door had a spring that complained and a latch that never caught. Somebody's iced tea sweated a ring into the table. A wasp investigated the railing and moved on. Heat pressed down until even the dog gave up on ambition. The whole afternoon passed without a single thing being achieved, and it was one of the good ones.
